Why it’s never been a better time to support local
I’m no stranger to family businesses – in fact, my family business history dates back to 1969. We started out manufacturing corporate furniture, but as time went on, we saw a need in the market for good quality, locally made educational furniture. We were driven by the knowledge that children are the future of this nation and that they deserve the best resources.
Furniture, furnishings, and equipment need to be more than just objects. They need to meet the pedagogical and educational needs of children to help them thrive in their learning environment. I became even more passionate about this as I watched my children grow up, and that’s how Step4 was born.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how we’ve stayed true to our local roots. Although we do import some products, a lot of our furnishings and storage solutions are made right here on the Central Coast. In my 50 years of manufacturing, I’ve never seen so much confidence in Australian manufacturing. It’s great to see more and more people leaning towards locally owned businesses and locally made products, because it has a positive impact on local economies and sustainability. At the crux of it, less importing = more local jobs and a smaller carbon footprint – something we’re all aiming for as best we can these days.
Choosing a local business as your go-to supplier also drives innovation which ultimately enhances the skillset of our country. The more feedback you provide to local businesses, the more you use their products, the more likely they are to want to keep on evolving and creating to meet your needs.
So, next time you’re on the hunt for a new collection of resources and furnishings, consider your local options. Consider how your support of local businesses contributes to a better and brighter future for Australian jobs and innovation. And above all, consider the people behind the businesses who’ll appreciate your support more than you’ll ever know. Trust me, it really does mean a lot.
