How this product aligns with the EYLF
Supporting play-based learning and inquiry
The Forestplay Water Cascade encourages children to engage in hands-on exploration and experimentation, fostering a natural curiosity about water flow and movement. As children manipulate the racing gates and observe the effects of their actions, they develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of cause and effect through play-based inquiry.
Developing early STEM and problem-solving skills
This product provides opportunities for children to engage with fundamental STEM concepts, such as measurement and fluid dynamics. By adjusting the height of the racing gates and observing how this affects water flow, children practice problem-solving and develop their ability to hypothesise and test their ideas in a collaborative environment.
Relevant EYLF Outcomes
Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners.
Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators.
Classroom, Play Activity & Provocation Ideas
Classroom & Learning Area Ideas
Set up the Forestplay Water Cascade in an outdoor learning area to create a dedicated space for exploration and inquiry related to water play and natural sciences. Incorporate natural materials such as rocks and plants around the cascade to enhance the connection with the environment.
Play-Based Activity Ideas
Encourage children to work together to design and build their own water pathways using the racing gates, fostering teamwork and communication skills. Organise a water race challenge where children can time how long it takes for different objects to travel through the cascade, integrating measurement and observation.
Provocation Ideas
Introduce storybooks about water cycles or rivers to inspire discussions about the natural world and encourage children to share their thoughts and ideas while playing with the water cascade. Use open-ended questions during play, such as “What happens if we change the height of the gate?” to stimulate critical thinking and dialogue.
